HOW IT WORKS
Scheduling on-site quantitative SCBA fit testing for your department is straightforward. Here is what to expect from first contact through completed testing.
SIMPLE. PROFESSIONAL. ON-SITE.
Fire Fit Solutions handles the logistics of bringing professional fit-testing equipment directly to your fire station. Your department's role is to provide information about your personnel and facepieces, coordinate a testing date, and make sure firefighters are available and prepared. We handle the rest.
CONTACT FIRE FIT SOLUTIONS
Reach out to Fire Fit Solutions to start the scheduling process. You can use the quote request form on this site or contact us directly. Let us know your department name, approximate number of firefighters needing testing, and the SCBA facepieces your department uses.
You do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. We will work through the details with you during the scheduling process.
PROVIDE DEPARTMENT INFORMATION
We will ask for some basic information to plan the testing session: the number of personnel needing testing, the specific SCBA facepiece make, model, and sizes used by your department, the number of stations involved, and your preferred testing date or date range.
Knowing the specific facepiece models in advance allows us to confirm compatibility and prepare appropriately before arriving at your station.
CONFIRM A TESTING DATE
We work with your department to identify a testing date that fits your operational schedule. We understand that fire departments run around the clock and that shift schedules, call volume, and operational demands affect availability. We aim to make scheduling as flexible as possible.
For departments with multiple stations or large numbers of personnel, testing may be scheduled across multiple sessions or dates.
PREPARE YOUR PERSONNEL
Before testing day, firefighters should be aware of a few important requirements. Facial hair that passes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face must be removed prior to testing — applicable regulations and standards prohibit facial hair at the sealing surface of tight-fitting respirators. Firefighters should also have their assigned SCBA facepiece available.
Firefighters who arrive with facial hair at the sealing surface cannot be fit tested with a tight-fitting facepiece and will need to reschedule.
WE COME TO YOUR STATION
On the scheduled testing date, Fire Fit Solutions arrives at your fire station with the fit-testing equipment. There is no need for your personnel to travel to an outside facility. Testing is conducted at your station using the SCBA facepieces your department uses in service.
We set up the testing equipment and work through your personnel systematically. Each firefighter completes the applicable quantitative fit-testing protocol with their assigned facepiece.
EACH FIREFIGHTER IS TESTED
Each firefighter dons their SCBA facepiece and performs a series of exercises while the fit-testing instrument measures the fit factor. The exercises — which include normal breathing, deep breathing, head movement, and talking — are designed to evaluate the seal under conditions that simulate real-world use.
The test produces a numerical fit factor for each firefighter. If the fit factor meets or exceeds the applicable minimum requirement, the test is passed. Results are recorded for each individual.
RECEIVE YOUR DOCUMENTATION
Following the completion of testing, Fire Fit Solutions provides the department with organized documentation of completed fit tests and results. This documentation is intended to assist departments with their respiratory protection program recordkeeping requirements.
If any firefighters do not achieve an acceptable fit factor, those results are documented as well. The department and the individual should work with their respiratory protection program administrator to determine appropriate next steps.
STAY ON SCHEDULE
Fit testing is not a one-time event — it is a recurring requirement. Fire Fit Solutions can help departments establish and maintain a consistent annual fit-testing schedule, making it easier to stay current with respiratory protection program requirements year after year.
Departments that schedule recurring testing with Fire Fit Solutions benefit from an established relationship and a streamlined process each time.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR DEPARTMENT
FACIAL HAIR
Firefighters must not have facial hair that passes between the sealing surface of the facepiece and the face. This is a regulatory requirement under applicable OSHA standards and must be addressed before testing day.
ASSIGNED FACEPIECE
Each firefighter should have their assigned SCBA facepiece available for testing. Testing must be performed with the specific make, model, style, and size of facepiece the firefighter will use in service.
PERSONNEL AVAILABILITY
Coordinate with your personnel to ensure firefighters are available during the scheduled testing window. Testing time per individual is relatively brief, but scheduling enough time for all personnel is important.
TESTING SPACE
A reasonably clean, indoor space at the station is preferred for testing. We will work with your department to identify a suitable location within your facility.
